Note E0901

Anna and Julius

I always knew I had to have Julius - he was too important a character to omit (though I did, of course, leave out Toby and Umar) and oh boy - after I read Gemini I knew I'd done the right thing in including him. He was originally going to be the prosecution lawyer, but I ditched him (in favour of DeSlime) and I made him a witness instead. So I looked for a song for him. And in this case, the title of the original Gilbert and Sullivan song ('Braid the Raven Hair') rather suggested vanity and self regard: the key character traits of Julius. With one exception, the entire section between Julius and Anna was written before Gemini was published: the only thing to be added later for Edinburgh was Julius's words 'I may need this one day'.

And with Julius, came Anna, and more variety: a duet.

The song came from the Mikado. The fortuitous bit is the second element of the song ("With the aid of dye") which Anna sings alone. In the Mikado, it's quite sweet and twee. But the music also suited a harsher interpretation which Jess Wilson (brilliant actress) brought off beautifully.

As with most of the songs, it was cut short when compared with the original, and I made little effort to tidy up the ending. I wanted it left hanging.

Braid the Raven Hair Smooth the Silken Knee
Chorus

Braid the raven hair
Weave the supple tress
Deck the maiden fair
In her loveliness
Paint the pretty face
Dye the coral lip
Emphasis the grace
Of her ladyship

Julius Smooth the silken knee
Show the shapely calf
I full handsome be
Other's only half
Cut the golden hair
Curl the handsome lip
I need another half:
A lovely ladyship!
Art and nature
Thus allied
Go to make a
Pretty bride
Art and nature thus allied
Go to make a pretty bride
Anna/Julius We then will share
Beauty as a pretty pair
We then will share
Beauty of a
Lovely perfect
Pretty pair
Of lovebirds as you'll ever see
Pitti-Sing Sit with downcast eye
Let it brim with dew
Try if you can cry
We will do so too
When you're summoned start
Like a frightened roe
Flutter little heart
Colour come and go
Anna With the aid of dye
A Pretty Violet eye
And a sweet sharp knife
You can take a life
You revenge can gain
Avenge a life of pain
Destroy a childhood friend
To achieve an end
Modesty at
Marriage-tide
Go to make a
Pretty bride
Modesty at marriage-tide
Go to make a pretty bride

Anna

Anna/Julius

I then will stand
Purified by my own hand
Destroy his peace

A Bloody painful
Lovely perfect Masterpiece
Of beauty and despair
Chorus

Braid the raven hair
Weave the supple tress
Deck the maiden fair
In her loveliness
Paint the pretty face
Dye the coral lip
Emphasis the grace
Of her ladyship

Art and nature
Thus allied
Go to make a
Pretty bride
Art and nature thus allied
Go to make a pretty bride
