Note E101

The overture for the Edinburgh Nikado was actually taken from the ACT I finale of the Mikado. It is a very short piece. Some people have asked why we didn't process in during an Overture piece - the answer is that when the piece was prepared, we had no idea how far we had to process or how long it would take us, or even whether we would be able to process. So we kept it short.

The first song of show is not a Gilbert and Sullivan song, so another reason for the Overture was to start the show off with a little bit of Gilbert and Sullivan.
